Jacaranda season in Johannesburg – when the city turns purple and then the roads run purple with a carpet of the fallen blossoms – should be known around the world, and it’s getting there. To help it on its way, the popular city guide Johannesburg in Your Pocket has chosen 12 finalists who entered their jacaranda photographs on Instagram for a competition.

People travel to Tokyo for cherry blossoms. Why not come to Joburg to see the jacarandas?

Editor of JIYP Laurice Taitz said, “Basically we want people to feel proud of their city, to see it with fresh eyes, to appreciate its beauty. People travel to Tokyo for cherry blossoms. Why not come to Joburg to see the jacarandas?

“Yes, they are an alien species, but this is a migrant city … everyone comes from somewhere else. The trees have been naturalised, so to speak.”
