Jacaranda season in Johannesburg – when the city turns purple and then the roads run purple with a carpet of the fallen blossoms – should be known around the world, and it’s getting there. To help it on its way, the popular city guide Johannesburg in Your Pocket has chosen 12 finalists who entered their jacaranda photographs on Instagram for a competition.

“Yes, they are an alien species, but this is a migrant city … everyone comes from somewhere else. The trees have been naturalised, so to speak.”
