South African Airways has cancelled all domestic, regional and international flights for Friday 15 November and Saturday 16 November due to proposed strike action, the airline has announced.

The cancellations followed an announcement by the South African Cabin Crew Association  and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa that their members would embark on industrial action from Friday. The already embattled airline is expected to lose R50 million a day if the strike goes ahead.

Only SAA-operated flights would be affected, the airline said. All flights operated on partner airlines, including SA Express, Mango, SA Airlink and all codeshare partners, would not be affected.

SAA announced this week that at least 900 members of its staff could lose their jobs, as the airline tries to cut costs.
