For those who can’t afford the often high prices of Cape Town hotels, but would still like some comfort and good taste, the well-known Johannesburg backpackers lodge Curiocity has opened what it calls a design-led hybrid hotel in Green Point.
Overnights at the hotel range from R285/$19.50 per person per night in a shared suite or dorm room (which are on the lower floor) to R1,200/$82 per night in one of the spacious Premium Suites, which have a private bathroom, lounge and kitchenette, as well as TV and air-conditioning. The suites are on the upper two floors.
Set in a three-storey building on Main Road, almost directly opposite the Point Virgin Active gym on what is becoming a sort of Hotel Row, Curiocity also has a café-restaurant, pool, and indoor and outdoor lounge spaces.
“Our spaces allow travellers to better connect to the city”
It’s been five years since Bheki Dube started Curiocity Backpackers in Maboneng, Johannesburg. Before that he ran the tour company Main Street Walks, when he was 16. Inner Johannesburg wasn’t the obvious place to stay for travellers in a city not known for tourism, but Dube has since made Curiocity a destination – to stay, meet other travellers and make expeditions from.
“Our spaces allow travellers of all ages and demographics to better connect to the city they’re visiting,” said Dube, 27, who last month won a Tropics Changemaker award as a tourism entrepreneur. In 2016, he opened a second Curiocity, in Durban.
To design the spaces, Dube said he collaborated exclusively with leading local designers to ensure every detail – from the decor to the staff uniforms – reflects the brand’s signature style. Rooms range from shared (with space for up to 12), private rooms and private suites (that can take up to 6).
The Green Point hotel is at 153 Main Road. For more information, please contact Curiocity.
