Adrenaline junkies around the world can add a new adventure tourism destination to their bucket list – the world’s longest over-ocean zipline, which was launched yesterday at Mossel Bay in the Western Cape of South Africa.
World first…. congratulations to everyone who made this possible!
The ride stretches 1.1 km across the ocean and dare devils can reach a speed of up to 80km per hour.
The opening itself drew thrill-seekers who “glided from the top of the rocky cliffs above the Point to the landing platform 1100 metres below”, according to the SABC.
Mossel Bay Municipality said it hopes the zipline – the longest single line zipline over an ocean – will boost tourism.

Mossel Bay Executive Mayor Alderman Harry Levendal, congratulated the directors of the Mossel Bay Zipline for their dreams becoming a reality and said their innovative venture has become a bucket list must do for thousands of locals and international tourists who will visit Mossel Bay to do so.
“Mossel Bay Municipality strives to be the trendsetting municipality in the country. We regard local economic development as very important and we support initiatives that will enhance tourism, the tourism economy and economic growth in our town and the greater Mossel Bay,” said Levendal.
Municipal manager, Advocate Thys Giliomee, was the first civilian to use the new Mossel Bay Zipline, followed by others, before strong winds eventually put a close to the event.
As from yesterday Mossel Bay’s Zipline has become “a landmark, a feature of Mossel Bay that we all are proud of,” said the Mayor.
Hundreds have already reserved their places at R450 per spot.
