Sleeping under the stars – what can be more exhilarating on an African safari? Ranging from the luxurious, where the star bed is safely attached to your suite or above it, on the roof, to treehouses, to a lone bed or sleeping mattress set up for you out in the veld, star beds, sky beds or “sleep-outs” come in all shapes and sizes and luxuriousness. There are plenty to choose from, but here are 10 we especially like.
Khwai Private Reserve, botswana
The Khwai sky bed is on a platform overlooking a waterhole. In March, Natural Selection opens its Kwessi Dunes camp in the NamibRand, and each guest will have their own sleep-out.
Singita Sweni, South Africa

“Handcrafted four-poster wooden beds sit on raised wooden platforms jutting out from a thatched-roof accommodation and are rolled out each night for guests to enjoy the most memorable sleep under the endless African sky.”
“The two new Starbed Suites are the epitome of private romantic safari accommodation. With a choice of sleeping indoors or under the African sky, each suite boasts two king-size beds (one on the roof under the stars).”
One of three treehouses on the Lion Sands private reserve in Sabi Sand. The Chalkley Treehouse “has been built on the site where our ancestor, Guy Aubrey Chalkley made camp in a centuries-old leadwood tree.”
” The Malori (meaning ‘dreamer’ in Tswana), offers a unique safari sleepout experience – guests can choose to sleep under the thatch or further along the deck where it is completely open. The Malori deck boasts a raised platform with a thatched overhang for protection should it rain.” Contact Tswalu.
